Five Myths About Working with an Interior Designer

Five Myths About Working with an Interior Designer

With every industry comes stereotypes and myths - interior design is no different. Over the last eight years I’ve owned my business, I’ve encountered a few myths about working with an Interior Designer that I am prepared to bust! Now, don’t get me wrong, there’s always exceptions to the rule, and of course, those who unfortunately help perpetuate stereotypes, but I can honestly say that most design professionals I’ve encountered would agree with me when I say there’s more of us who want these stereotypes busted than don’t!

With that being said, let’s get some truth bombs out here!

Myth: A designer will only select the most expensive items.

Truth: Good designers are resourceful, and select from multiple sources, including thrift.

This is a big one for me - some of the most effective design selections come from unlikely sources. If you’re interviewing a designer, and they insist that they will only source “from the trade,” ask more questions. There could be a logical and business-related answer, but if you get the sense that it’s because they have a formula, or it’s just “how they work,” you may not get a design that’s highly personalized to you.

Myth: A designer will make my house look unapproachable and “too decorated.”

Truth: There’s a designer for every “look.” Search for someone who’s work appeals to how you want your home to feel.

Although a designer and client’s taste need not perfectly alight, it’s important for a client to connect with the designer’s inherent style, otherwise, there could be an awkward tug of war trying to communicate visions for the space. We like to ask potential clients which of our projects resonates the most with them. It tells us so much about whether we may be a good fit!

Myth: A designer is only needed for the “pretty stuff.”

Truth: A designer’s role includes space planning, lighting design, functionality & managing budgets - to name a few.

A large part of the designer’s role is to facilitate decisions, and make the process seamless for the client. That includes A LOT of organization, systems and processes, which are certainly not “pretty stuff.” In fact, the majority of our time is usually spent on the backend - making sure the client’s experience is indeed the luxury service it is intended to be.

Myth: Hiring an interior designer will just increase my project costs.

Truth: In many cases, hiring a designer can save you costly mistakes.

I can’t emphasize this enough - hire a designer before you NEED a designer.

Myth: Designers are divas.

Truth: Designers are passionate, creative people, who are 100% invested in the success of your project.

We’ve all laughed at the interior designer character portrayed in movies swanning around, pointing at what they love, hate, and “simply cannot deal with.” The truth is, we have a hard time containing our passion! When you hire a designer, you want them to be ALL IN on your project, however, kindness and professionalism is a must.
